Heat get rings, then win over Celtics, 120-107

MIAMI (AP) ? LeBron James got cramps, Ray Allen was snubbed and Dwyane Wade was steaming.

None of that spoiled the Miami Heat mood on ring night.

Wade scored 29 points, James finished 26 points and 10 rebounds while missing much of the second half because of cramps in both legs, and the reigning NBA champion Heat beat the Boston Celtics 120-107 on Tuesday night in the season opener for both teams.

There were actual fireworks before the game to close the ceremony where the Heat got their championship rings and raised their title banner. There also were plenty of figurative fireworks late, first with Boston almost digging out of a 19-point hole and, after the outcome was decided, Rajon Rondo flagrantly fouling Wade by wrapping his arms around his neck on a drive.

In the end, though, the first Celtics-Heat matchup of this season was like the final one of last season ? with Miami winning.

"It was good to cap this night off with a win," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "It was an emotional time for all of us in our organization."

Even for the newcomers, like Allen. He scored 19 points ? needing only seven field goal attempts ? in his first game with Miami since leaving Boston over the summer. Chris Bosh had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Miami.

Allen got chants from the Heat crowd, which is nothing new. Except this time, they were positive.

"Never thought I'd hear that here," Allen said.

Paul Pierce scored 23 points, Rondo finished with 20 points and 13 assists, and Leandro Barbosa scored 16 for Boston. The Celtics, who lost to the Heat in last season's Eastern Conference finals, were not on the court for the ring ceremony.

They almost wrecked the festive mood with a late comeback.

An 11-2 run late in the fourth quarter got Boston within 111-107 on Courtney Lee's layup with 2:09 left. That was the last Celtics' hurrah ? Bosh scored the game's next seven points, sealing it for Miami.

"I thought they were the aggressor the whole game," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "They got on the floor where they wanted to get on the floor. They took us out of stuff that they wanted to."

Rashard Lewis scored 10 points for Miami, which held on even while James, last season's MVP of both the regular season and NBA Finals, was in the locker room for the second time because of the cramps, first in his right leg and then his left.

"It's not an all-the-time thing," James said. "I'm not too worried about it."

The Heat got their championship rings from owner Micky Arison before the game, then watched the banner get hoisted to the rafters. More emotion came late, when Wade drove past Rondo ? and the Celtics guard grabbed Wade around the neck. Wade appeared as though he was ready to throw the ball at Rondo in retaliation, and stopped himself.

"I thought he hooked me," Rondo said.

Wade had a different opinion.

"It was a punk play by him," Wade said. "The league will take care of it. He clotheslined me, with two hands."

So Rondo raised eyebrows by putting hands on Wade. Kevin Garnett made news by not offering his hand to Allen.

As Allen entered the game for the first time, he trotted toward the Boston bench, exchanging a handshake, embrace and a few words with Rivers, who hasn't hidden his displeasure about his former shooting guard's decision to sign with Miami and didn't sound certain before the game how he would react when he saw Allen in Miami colors. Allen then briskly shook hands with a few assistant coaches.

But when Allen tried to engage Garnett, the mutual pleasantries ended. Allen tapped Garnett on the shoulder as he sat on the Boston bench; Garnett didn't even flinch, staring straight ahead, refusing to acknowledge the gesture in any way.

"I was just trying to focus as much as I could. I am such an intense person," Garnett said. "It was a blank. Obviously he's on the other side. It's time to play the game, man."

Allen didn't seem flustered. His first shot in a Miami uniform was ? what else? ? a corner 3-pointer, which swished.

"He was by himself in the corner," Rivers said. "You'd think we'd know better."

Miami controlled much of the first half, taking a 62-54 lead after James went by Pierce and Garnett for a two-handed dunk and yell for the crowd.

The first Heat angst of the season came in the third quarter, when James walked slowly to the bench after a timeout with 4:40 remaining, favoring his right leg and then headed out the tunnel toward the locker room.

When he left, the Miami lead was 79-70.

When he returned to open the fourth quarter, the lead was 93-76. The Heat scored the final eight points of the third, with Bosh, Allen, Mario Chalmers and Lewis all scoring in the final 2:17 to give the Heat their biggest lead of the game.

James ? who was dealing with a cramping issue, like he experienced at times in last season's NBA Finals ? opened the fourth quarter with a jumper to extend the run to 10-0, and Miami seemed well on its way. But he returned to the locker room a short time later, the cramps having flared up again.

"Once you start cramping, there's nothing you can do about it," James said.

Jeff Green, who had season-ending surgery for an aortic aneurysm last January, played in a game that counts for the first time since May 11, 2011 ? also in Miami, when the Heat ousted the Celtics from that season's playoffs. Green finished with three points in 23 minutes.

NOTES: Wade passed the 15,000-point mark for his career early in the second quarter, becoming the 123rd player in NBA history to reach that mark, according to STATS LLC. ... Rondo had at least 10 assists for the 25th straight regular-season game. ... The Celtics allowed 62 points in the first half; they gave up 62 or more only seven times in 379 regular-season and playoff games over the past four seasons. ... Miami players wore sneakers with gold somewhere in the color scheme; James' were primarily gold ? in honor of the ring ? and trimmed in white and red.

Gene polymorphisms identified that are responsible for breast density and cancer risk

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? It has long been known that breast density, or mammographic density, is a strong risk factor for breast cancer, and that estrogen and progestin hormone therapy increases dense breast tissue. Now, a study published in BioMed Central's open access journal Breast Cancer Research has identified several gene variants in hormone metabolism and growth factor pathways that may be associated with breast density and, hence, breast cancer risk.

Mammographic density relates to the fact that x-rays permeate different types of breast tissue in different ways, leading to white areas on the mammogram. Fatty tissue appears on the mammogram as relatively translucent, whereas dense breast tissue contains more stromal tissue and epithelial cells, appearing as white areas. Women with a breast density of 75% or more have a 4-5 times higher risk of developing breast cancer than women of the same age with little or no density.

Controversy exists over why breast density is a cancer risk. Many studies suggest that density is at least partially inherited, and twin studies show that genetic factors do play a role in the variation observed. Breast density decreases naturally with older age and menopause, but also increases with hormone therapy. Merete Ellingjord-Dale and co-authors, from academic centers in Norway and Los Angeles, set out to investigate which genes could play a role in determining breast density. Because of the clear involvement of hormones, they were looking particularly for genes involved in hormone metabolism.

Using data from 2,036 women who participated in the Norwegian Breast Cancer Screening Program in 2004, and separating the participants into hormone therapy users and non-users, the authors found that different gene variants appeared to be important depending on the women's hormone therapy usage.

There was evidence to suggest that variants in the prolactin (PRL) gene were associated with breast density in users of estrogen and progestin, as well as norethisterone acetate (a common regimen in Nordic countries). In non-users of hormone therapy, variants in the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and SULT1A1/2 genes were significantly associated with breast density.

The findings suggest that several genes in hormone metabolism and growth factor pathways are indeed implicated in determining breast density, and might increase breast cancer risk. Commenting on the findings, lead author, Merete Ellingjord-Dale said, "One reason it has been so difficult to pinpoint which genes are responsible for mammographic density is that the effect of some genetic variants may be amplified in combination with hormone therapy. Consequently in the presence of hormone therapy these genes cause increased density."

She continued, "It is important to consider both the genetic and non-genetic factors simultaneously. Exploring the functional role of gene variants associated with mammographic density could further clarify the biological mechanisms involved. "

Israel: Palestinians fired 79 rocket at us

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Palestinians fired dozens of rockets into Israel from Gaza on Wednesday and an Israeli air strike killed a militant, a day after the Emir of Qatar made a rare visit to the enclave's Hamas leadership.

Hamas claimed responsibility for some of the rocket and mortar bomb attacks, prompting some Israelis to wonder whether it had been emboldened by the Qatari visit on Tuesday that broke the Islamist group's diplomatic isolation.

In recent months, Hamas has largely held its fire when other militant factions have launched cross-border rocket attacks, but the sudden upsurge in violence stoked fears that the hostilities could escalate further.

Hamas accused Israel of stepping up air strikes in the Gaza Strip, a move it said was meant to convey Israeli anger over Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani's visit, and pledged to "continue to hold a gun ... until Palestine is liberated".

Israel said it was "astounding" that Qatar, a U.S.-allied Gulf state, would take sides in the Palestinian dispute and endorse Hamas, branded by the West as a terrorist group. Hamas seized the Gaza Strip in 2007 from fighters loyal to the Fatah faction of Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Some analysts saw the Qatari ruler's trip, the first by any national leader to Gaza since Hamas took over, as an attempt to build bridges between the group and the West and coax it into the peace camp amid Arab turmoil across the Middle East.

A Palestinian official said Egypt was trying to mediate a truce.

"The contacts Cairo made resulted in a verbal promise by Hamas to calm the situation down and Israel said it was monitoring calm on the ground and would refrain from attacks unless it was subject to rocket fire from Gaza," said the official, who is close to the talks.

Israeli officials had no immediate comment. Previous rounds of cross-border attacks have usually fizzled out in days, with both Israel and Hamas seemingly aware of the risks of ramping up the low-intensity conflict.

Israel's three-week-long invasion of the Gaza Strip, launched in 2008 with the declared aim of curbing rocket launches, drew international criticism over a heavy Palestinian casualty toll.

Though hostile to Israel, Hamas has mostly sought to avoid direct clashes as it shores up its rule in the face of more radical challengers and seeks potential allies abroad.

NETANYAHU VISITS ANTI-MISSILE SITE

In a second day of violence, a Hamas militant was killed on Wednesday in an air strike, which Israel said was intended to stop rocket launches. On Tuesday, Israel killed three Hamas men, saying they had either launched attacks or were about to do so.

In southern Israel, three agricultural workers were wounded when a Palestinian rocket exploded near them.

An Israeli military spokeswoman, said 79 projectiles had been fired at Israel and that the Iron Dome system had intercepted eight of them. She said several homes had been damaged by Palestinian rockets.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is seeking a renewed mandate in Israel's January 22 election, visited an Iron Dome anti-missile battery near the southern city of Ashkelon on Wednesday and threatened stronger Israeli military action in Gaza.

"We did not choose this escalation, nor did we initiate it, but if it continues, we are prepared for a much wider and deeper operation," he said, pledging to press on with "targeted attacks" against militants preparing to fire rockets.

Israel kept schools shut in communities near the fenced Gaza boundary and residents were urged to remain indoors.

Hamas has refused to renounce violence or recognize Israel's right to exist, and is ostracized by the Quartet of Middle East mediators comprising the United States, United Nations, European Union and Russia.

However, Hamas has said it would accept a truce with Israel in return for a state in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Why so many great white encounters this year?

A fatal shark attack off the coast of California Tuesday is raising fresh questions about an uptick in encounters between white sharks and humans along the West Coast and beyond.

Officials are investigating the bite marks in the torso of a man killed at a popular swimming spot near Vandenberg Air Force Base to determine the species of shark in the attack, but experts have suggested that it is almost certainly a great white.

The death is the 13th in California waters since 1950, but the fifth since 2003. That increased rate of fatal attacks, combined with an increasing number of great white sightings this summer on both coasts, has led to speculation over what is behind the increased interface.

IN PICTURES: Sharks rule

The answer is, for now, unclear. Some scientists say better management of the commercial fishing industry has led to a substantial increase in the white shark population. Others suggest that the increasing number of people surfing, swimming, and kayaking has created new opportunities for white sharks and humans to cross paths.

But many experts agree that smartphones are giving people unprecedented ability to record white shark encounters ? adding to the attention these encounters receive ? and they say the pattern of attacks and sightings fits well into their understanding of the shark's seasonal migrations.

Above all, they agree that data show white shark attacks remain exceedingly rare, and the threat posed by them is small.

The issue first gained attention in July, when a white shark bit a kayak off Santa Cruz, Calif., throwing the man out of his boat. He was unhurt. The same week, a white shark was photographed trailing a kayak off Cape Cod, though it never attacked.

The Cape saw a record number of white shark sightings this summer. Likewise, officials in Santa Barbara, Calif., have been surprised at the number of white-shark sightings.

?It?s very unusual to see this many white sharks in our area,? Mick Kronman, harbor operations manager with the city?s Waterfront Department, told Noozhawk, a local news website. ?They?ve been really close.?

Santa Barbara officials responded by posting warning signs at beaches for the first time. Cape Cod officials are currently discussing how to handle the situation.

On the Cape, a growth of the seal population is seen as bringing more white sharks, which feed on the seals. Similar dynamics could be in play off the California coast. The sightings here could signal that marine ecosystems are becoming more healthy after the passage laws targeting overfishing, such as the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 and a ban on near-shore gill nets in 1994.

According to one estimate, there could be a few as 300 white sharks in California waters. But whether that represents an increase, decrease, or steady number is virtually impossible to know.

?We can?t know what low means because we don?t know how many there were prior to human fishing pressure,? says Chris Lowe, a marine biologist at California State University, Long Beach.

He suggests that the number of white sharks off California has increased significantly in recent years. ?They?ve made a comeback bigger than most biologists would imagine,? he says.

But Andrew Nosal of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif., told the Los Angeles Times that he attributes the increased interface between humans and white sharks more to human activity.

What is more certain is the seasonal regularity.

Pacific white sharks hang out in what is known as the ?White Shark Caf?? about 1,000 miles off shore for about six months of the year and then head for the Baja Peninsula. The migration takes about three weeks of swimming high speed for 50 miles per day, leaving them famished when they arrive near land. As they move northward throughout the summer and autumn into California waters, they're scouring the coastline where their prey lives ? and where humans frolic.

?There is most definitely a seasonal pattern to this,? says Sal Jorgenson, senior researcher at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Despite all this, white sharks pose no serious threat to humans, says Dr. Lowe. ?More people are killed driving to the beach, and yet we all take that risk.?

by Mallory Brown
Richmond County Daily Journal
Richmond County Daily Journal

Dunham?s Sports, a popular name in sporting goods, will soon open its doors to Richmond County, just in time for the winter season.

The store has announced its projected opening date for the first weekend in December in the Pineridge Crossing shopping center in Rockingham, near the Ollie?s Bargain Outlet on East Broad Avenue.

?Rockingham is a market that fits well into Dunham?s growth strategy,? said Tom Lemere, director of advertising for Dunham?s Sports. ?Rockingham and the surrounding area have a great group of sports enthusiasts covering the categories we sell.?

According to Lemere, the store will carry a full line of sporting goods for baseball/softball, football, soccer, basketball, bikes, water sports, kayaks and canoes.

?A few of our larger areas include the Fairway Golf Center carries all the top brands like Taylormade, Callaway, Nike, and Titleist,? he said. ?The hunting department has all the big names like Remington, Mosseburg, Bushnell, Barnett and more. You will find Nike, Under Armour, Reebok, Adidas, Columbia, Carhartt in our large footwear and apparel departments. The exercise department carries everything you need for a fantastic home gym with names like Pro-Form, Everlast, Horizon Fitness, Marcy and many, many more.?

The new store will also bring 30 to 40 new jobs to the county, Lemere said.

?We are excited about being able to open a store in Rockingham to serve the sporting goods needs of the area,? he added.

Rockingham City Manager Monty Crump called the business a positive addition.

?That whole shopping center is undergoing a thorough revitalization,? he said. ?I think it?s an excellent sign that our shopping centers are being filled back in with businesses ? That creates jobs, (taxes), and provides traffic to the community. It?s all really positive news.?

He added that other businesses have expressed their interest in placing stores around the new location.

?We?ve got several good things going on with that shopping center,? Crump said. ?We?re very fortunate, and I think it says a lot about the community bringing those shops back.?

From acrobatic?stunts to mid-air tosses, cheerleading has increasingly been labeled one of the most dangerous athletic activities for young people. In response, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has released a set of guidelines for coaches, parents and school officials in an attempt to prevent injuries.

?We?ve recently been seeing an increase in the number of cheerleading injuries,? said Dr. Jeffrey Mjaanes, co-author of the AAP guidelines.??There?s been a huge increase in the number of participants so it?s logical that the number of injuries will also increase. So we presented these guidelines to get it under control and hopefully decrease the growing number of injuries.?

One of the main concerns is that although so many high schools and colleges have cheerleading squads, few of them consider cheerleading a sport. And without that classification, cheerleading is not subject to the same rules and regulations as activities that are officially considered sports.

?In many states and areas, cheerleading is not considered a sanctioned sport. It?s often more of a club sport,? Mjaanes said. ?When an activity is considered a club sport instead of a sanctioned sport, it tends to get a little haphazard in terms of coaching qualifications, safety nets, facility adequacy. So we?re trying to encourage state schools to make cheerleading a sanctioned sport to increase?acceptability?to good medical care, qualified coaches, adequate facilities and injury surveillance.?

The AAP is also urging schools to take precautionary measures such as limits on the height of pyramid formations and ?surfaces where stunts can be performed. It also recommends pre-season physicals and better training.

?The injuries that are the most common are ankle and knee sprains but we?re most concerned about catastrophic injuries, usually involving the head or neck,? Dr. Mjaanes said. ?The average is only about five a year so it?s uncommon but absolutely devastating for the athlete who suffers them. We?re trying to decrease that rate. And those tend to occur in the stunts, pyramids.?

Pedestrian hit by car bounces off windshield, lands on feet (VIDEO)

An incredible video that appears to show a pedestrian bounce off the windshield of a vehicle involved in a high-speed chase?and walk away seemingly unscathed?is making the rounds online.

The footage, shot from the car's dash-cam, shows the vehicle speed through an intersection and swerve as it approaches a man crossing the street. The man jumps onto the vehicle's hood?smashing the windshield?then rolls off when the car comes to a stop, landing on his feet.

The stunned man looks back at the driver, brushing himself off.

According to the LiveLeak.com user who uploaded the video, the footage was captured on Oct. 17 in Russia. According to NBC, which showed the footage on the "Today" show, the car was being pursued by police who later released the video.

Oddly enough, dash-cam videos of pedestrians bouncing off cars are not that uncommon in Russia. In this one, uploaded in August, a woman crossing a street in heavy traffic is struck by an oncoming car.

Like the pedestrian in the video above, she got up and walked away.

5 Terrifying Moments from Video Game History ? Man Cave Daily

by Steve Stevenson

The great thing about video games is their potential to immerse us totally in a fictional world. Even in their early days, with graphics that would make a Rubik?s Cube laugh scornfully, video games could capture the imagination and tap directly into our adrenal glands. That?s great if you want the buzz of drifting a ferrari, or exploding a star-cruiser. It?s slightly more worrying, though, when the video game?s sole objective is to make you @?$! your pants.

So steel yourself, brave gamer, as we take a journey through video game history and take a look at some of the? OH MY GOD LOOK BEHIND YOU!!

METROIDS!! (Metroid, 1986)

samus versus metroids

For about ten days in the ?80s, there were more female video game characters than female video game players

When home gaming was just beginning its golden-age, Metroid was a ground-breaking newcomer that seemed gargantuan and labyrinthine compared to its peers. Set on an eerie alien world, you took control of a futuristic bounty-hunter, and could wander for hours through haunting caverns filled with more dangerous indigenous lifeforms than Australia could shake a spider-infested stick at.

It wasn?t until the final level that the true horror began. Dropping suddenly into a laboratory-like environment where automated guns fired at you with alarming regularity was disconcerting enough; but then came the Metroids? hulking jellyfish-like abominations unlike anything you had encountered before. They were impervious to most of your weaponry, honed in on you with frightening speed, and once they caught you they didn?t stop leeching your energy until you were dead.

Metroids might seem like child?s-play to a modern gamer, but at the time, enemies with this kind of merciless attack-pattern were unprecedented. More worrying still is that you would have been leveling up your character throughout the entire game up to this point, modifying your energy and weapons capabilities until you felt damn near invincible. To have an enemy that made a nonsense of all your achievements suddenly ambush you was, to say the least, bowel troubling. Worst of all, if you were unfortunate enough to make it this far without obtaining the ice-beam weapon, the Metroids were impossible to kill. There hadn?t been a more horrifying surprise at the end of a game since John Doe from Se7en hosted Let?s Make A Deal.

LEECH AMBUSH!! (Splatterhouse, 1988)

rick is ambushed by bore worms in splatterhouse

If the ?80s taught us one thing, it?s that nobody in a goalie mask is the hero

In the late ?80s Splatterhouse carved its way into the arcades with all the subtlety of a rusty lump hammer. Squeezing every horror movie trope for all it was worth, Splatterhouse became a nightmare mishmash of grotesque demons, deadly poltergeists and womb-like abominations? all of which you could splat into wallpaper paste with a well-timed blow from your axe-handle. With hanging corpses that puked acid at you, and chainsaw-handed freaks getting all up in your grill, Splatterhouse was full of awful surprises?none more so awful than the boreworm ambush.

It started when you entered the first boss room, and instantly realised that you were totally boned. By this point you would yet to have encountered boreworms?they?re leech-like creatures that are fast and difficult to hit, a pain in the ass that rank right up there with the birds from Castlevania. And now you had wandered into a room where they were piled up like dirty laundry. What followed was possibly the most button-mashing, joystick-wiggling panic dance in arcade history, as you desperately tried to avoid being overwhelmed. Then, when you thought it was all over, the corpse that had been hanging by its neck from an open attic throughout the whole ordeal suddenly had a surprise for you? a final boreworm that burst from its chest, just in time to see you squeal like a girl. Perhaps not one of the first examples of a video game salute to the Thank-God-He?s-Dead-Oh-No-Wait-He-Isn?t horror trope, but certainly one of the most memorable.

WHY WON?T IT DIE!?!? (Resident Evil, 1996)

chris red field takes on a zombie in resident evil

?Excuse me, sir? Is this your mansi?AAAIEEE IT HAS NO NOSE!?

Although Resident Evil wasn?t the first game in it?s genre, it was the first of its kind to find a home on the massively popular Playstation games console, and is justly credited with bringing survival horror to the masses. It?s important to remember that up to this point, for many gamers, the entire concept of survival strategy in a horror game was summed up with ?shoot stuff until stuff is dead?. A demon/zombie/girl-scout would charge you, and you would shoot it. Rinse and repeat. End of story. So when us innocent console gamers of the past piloted our clumsy Jill Valentines or Chris Redfields into their first zombie encounter, we really weren?t prepared for what came next?

The game?s focus on tense atmosphere, creepy music and a (for the time) ground-breaking cutscene couldn?t have prepared us for that first moment when, after pumping a zombie full of your limited pistol bullets, it got up from the ground and tried to eat the look of panic clean off your face. More shots, more blood, and still it came. Crawling now, and still moaning like some kind of ghostly cow. And God help you if you tried to take it on with the knife?

Sure, the rest of the game was mostly solving over-elaborate puzzles and hilariously bad dialogue, but for that one shining moment, when I fondly remember spending a full two minutes training a pistol on a computer sprite just incase it wasn?t really dead, Resident Evil raised the bar in video game terror.

DWARVES!!! ARRRRGH!! (Silent Hill, 1999)

dwarf attacks in silent hill

?We prefer to be called little people from hell.?

Unlike Resident Evil, which became more about terrible plots and convoluted action sequences, Silent Hill dedicated itself entirely to creeping you out. Whether you were being chased through the dense fog by sinister mutants, or stumbling through a dark alternate nightmare world of blood and rust, Silent Hill used every trick in the book to keep you on edge.

Perhaps one of its cleverest tricks was the use of the radio and the torch. For those of you unfamiliar with either the game or the movie (shame on you, go rent one or both right now) the broken radio would emit a creepy burst of static whenever monsters were approaching, and with many of the levels being in total darkness, the torch would often be the only point of light in the game. The clever twist was that the very things that let you see and hear your enemies, also let them see and hear you?

This was first made apparent in the school level, where the abandoned, pitch-black corridors were patrolled by shuffling, mutant dwarf monsters. You could walk into a room with your radio and torch turned off and hear them moving around. You could choose to brave the dark and hopefully sneak past them, or you could use your torch and radio. Almost as soon as you turned the torch on the monsters would zero in on you, coming out of the shadows and into your circle of light like something out of a nightmare, while your radio crackled and whined the soundtrack to your imminent demise.

These days, the kind of lighting effects in games that allow a room to be lit by a portable light source are taken for granted, but at the time of its release the technology was still groundbreaking, and Silent Hill used it in a way that still stands up to modern games in terms of ruining a perfectly good pair of pants.

I?M LOSING MY MIND!! NEEEEEEEE!!!! (Eternal Darkness, 2004)

a women dead in the bath tub in eternal darkness

Blood is great for the skin, but only when it?s underneath it

Eternal Darkness doesn?t make the scary-moments grade because its monsters are the most intimidating, or its atmosphere the most tense; it makes the grade because how it tries to scare you is by far the most fun and original way in video game history. Eternal Darkness tries to convince you that you?re losing your mind.

For those of you who haven?t played the game, please don?t read on. Go and find an old copy of the game and play it through. It?s not the best game out there, but there are certain moments that?ll make you glad you made the effort.

Now, for those who have played, you?ll likely remember the times when your character would suddenly return to a room only to find themselves walking on the ceiling, or that your television would appear to mute itself, or that your inventory would suddenly be wiped. Or maybe your game would pretend to to crash, or stop midway to tell you you?d only purchased a demo version. Or sprinkle power-ups around making you think you?d hit the jackpot, only to have the screen white out while your avatar clutched his or her head, bemoaning their lost marbles as you realize the power-ups were never there in the first place. Eternal Darkness was crammed with more ?What the @?$%?? moments than Clint Eastwood?s entire history of political commentary.

Eternal Darkness may not have been a heavy-weight in the horror game circles- appearing only on the comparatively under-powered Game Cube system- but it achieved with originality and creativity what many slicker games failed to do with blood and guts.

CONCLUSION

Its easy to become jaded with horror themed games these days. After all, those of us who are grownup are less concerned with zombies and demons and more concerned with unemployment or that weird lump on our foot. And the younger kids? They?ve grown up with YouTube, and have thus become desensitised to the point that grizzled Vietnam veterans would shake their head in pity. But there are still great games out there bringing us brand new worlds, brand new monsters, and brand new ways to die. So here?s to the game developers, past and present, who have done their damnedest to momentarily take us out of the real world, and submerge us fully into a realm of spine-tingling terror. Thanks guys? I guess?

Analysis: Romney has path to victory, but Obama still has slight edge

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Suddenly, Republican Mitt Romney has a viable path to victory in the tight battle for the White House.

Democratic President Barack Obama still appears to have the upper hand in the state-by-state fight to cobble together the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency in the November 6 election.

But Romney's recent surge in the polls after his strong performance in his first debate with Obama on October 3 has propelled the Republican into the lead or within striking distance in enough states to give him a reasonable chance of beating Obama to the finish line.

Ohio, long seen as the key to unlocking the White House, looms large in every victory scenario for either candidate - particularly Romney. Until the last two weeks, polls did not show Romney with enough support in other crucial states to give him a clear path even if he won Ohio.

But he has that now, as the campaign enters its final two weeks with eight states in play as toss-ups.

"Before the first debate the electoral math looked like a real reach for Romney. Today, it looks quite possible," said Peter Brown, a pollster at Quinnipiac University.

"Ohio is the big unknown, and it's Romney's biggest obstacle," Brown said. "If Romney can win Ohio, he's likely to win the election."

The changing map has led Romney to make some shifts in strategy.

He began moving some staff from North Carolina, a one-time battleground where he now has a solid lead, to other swing states this week. The former Massachusetts governor's campaign also bolstered its television advertising in Iowa and Wisconsin, where polls indicate Obama has slim leads.

The RealClearPolitics average of polls gives Obama a lead of at least four percentage points in states that account for 237 electoral votes, while Romney enters the final stretch with an edge of that size in states that represent 206 electoral votes.

That leaves a reduced battlefield of eight toss-up states and 95 electoral votes, all won by Obama in the 2008 election - Colorado (9 electoral votes), Florida (29), Iowa (6), Nevada (6), New Hampshire (4), Ohio (18), Virginia (13) and Wisconsin (10).

In the last two weeks Romney has moved into a small lead or a virtual tie with Obama in Florida, Colorado, New Hampshire and Virginia, which together account for 55 electoral votes. A sweep of all four still would leave Romney nine electoral votes short of victory - a big reason why the race is boiling down to the battle in Ohio.

A win in Ohio would put Romney over the top and give him some margin of error to lose other states that are still in play. If he does not win Ohio, either Wisconsin or a combination of Nevada and Iowa still could be enough to win, although Obama, in addition to having slim leads in Wisconsin and Iowa, also leads in Nevada.

"Things have moved consistently in Romney's direction, but he still hasn't unlocked the gates to enough places yet," said pollster Thomas Riehle of YouGov, a market research company that is conducting polling in swing states. "Romney needs more good news before he's a safe bet to win."

LOOKING A LOT LIKE 2000, AND 2004

The tightening race has created many different scenarios, including the possibility that the Electoral College winner will not capture the most votes nationwide - similar to what happened in 2000, when Republican George W. Bush got more electoral votes than Democrat Al Gore, who received more of the popular vote.

The prominence of Ohio also has invoked memories of 2004, when Bush won re-election over Democrat John Kerry in the early hours of the morning after Election Day by a margin of less than 120,000 votes in the Midwestern state.

Both candidates are pouring time and resources into Ohio, where Obama has held a steady lead for months and now has an average poll advantage of more than 2 percentage points, according to RealClearPolitics.

HOLDING ON IN THE MIDWEST?

Romney, a wealthy former private equity executive who opposed the Obama-backed federal bailout of the auto industry, has struggled to connect with blue-collar voters in Ohio, where one in eight jobs is tied to the auto industry and the state unemployment rate is lower than the national average of 7.8 percent.

Iowa and Wisconsin, where RealClearPolitics puts Obama's average lead at between two and three percentage points, also have lower state unemployment rates than nationally.

Along with Ohio, they could give the Obama campaign a Midwestern stronghold of 34 electoral votes that protects him against potential losses elsewhere.

"As you look across the country, you are seeing the president is continuing to be very strong in the Midwest in places like Ohio, Iowa, Wisconsin," Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said. "I think we've held our support in the Midwest."

If Obama wins the states where he currently has comfortable leads and adds just those three Midwestern states, he would have 271 electoral votes - enough to be re-elected.

"Until we see something that suggests other states are in play, these Wisconsin, Iowa and Ohio numbers mean it's still a reach for Romney to win," said Lee Miringoff, a Marist College pollster.

He released surveys on Thursday showing Obama with a lead of eight points in Iowa and six points in Wisconsin, although a survey by Public Policy Polling on Friday gave Romney a one-point edge in Iowa.

Romney campaign aides say they are confident that he has enough momentum in Ohio and other swing states to pull out a win, pointing to his growing crowds and improving poll numbers, including those from the campaign's own surveys.

"The dynamic has very much changed in the swing states," said a senior Romney adviser who spoke on condition of anonymity. "The underlying fundamentals in the swing states have changed dramatically in Romney's favor."

In states where Romney has made gains, they have been fueled in part by improvements in his personal favorability ratings, gains with independents and a reduction in Obama's large lead among unmarried women voters.

Romney advisers said the first debate eased the concerns of some voters in swing states who have been bombarded for months by attack ads portraying the Republican as an out-of-touch multimillionaire with little sympathy for the middle class.

"People are getting a lot of information and what they're seeing is very much at odds with the ads that have run," the Romney adviser said. "That has been the biggest impact."

The Obama campaign is counting on what polls show is strong support from the growing Hispanic community to make a difference in Nevada and Colorado, although the level of intensity and voter turnout among Hispanics will be a wild card.

Any gains for Obama among Hispanics could be offset, however, by what polls have found is decreased support among the young and first-time voters who helped sweep Obama to victory over Republican John McCain in 2008.

Most national polls show Obama and Romney deadlocked. A Reuters/Ipsos daily online tracking poll on Saturday gave Obama a 1-point national advantage. Ipsos projects the president will win 315 electoral votes.

In such a close race, any surprise development during the final two weeks could loom large.

Obama and Romney will have their final debate, on foreign policy, on Monday in Boca Raton, Florida, where Romney is once again likely to challenge the president on his handling of the deadly attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

The White House on Saturday denied a report by The New York Times that the Obama administration and Iran had agreed to hold one-on-one talks about Iran's nuclear program, another issue that could shape the narrative of the campaign's final days.

Meanwhile, Obama's handling of the struggling economy will again be the focus when the Department of Labor releases the unemployment figures for October on November 2, just four days before the election. The report for September gave Democrats a boost by showing that the nation's unemployment rate was 7.8 percent, down from 8.1 percent in August.

"It was always going to be a really close election," Ipsos pollster Julia Clark said. "But the electoral math still adds up in Obama's favor at the moment."

There is an important legal difference from the present along with a loan. A very generous family member as well as friend may offer you $5000 for vehicle repairs, as an example. In the event that there's no hope associated with repayment, the amount of money can be viewed as a present. The actual provider could not file suit with regard to repayment after inside a municipal fit. Cost-free MULTILEVEL MARKETING Plans Part 1 Internet marketing ...

There?s nothing worse than getting to the end of the month and discovering that you have spent more money on your MLM than you?ve actually made. That?s why it?s extremely essential that you learn some free MLM marketing strategies before you spend yourself out associated with business. MLM is an ever-changing industry and thanks to the internet, there is more free of charge MLM marketing strategies than ever before.

In Part 1 of the article, I want to share with you the best free MLM marketing strategies which you can use to build your business online. Let?s get started?

Free MLM Marketing Strategies For Internet marketing

One of the most popular free MLM marketing strategies needs to be BLOGGING. Owning your own blog allows you to do, say and write whatever you want, without anybody restricting your content. A blog is basically the ?HUB? or ?nerve centre? of the business and is a place where one can promote your business, affiliate products, videos, articles and anything else that you do online.

The best thing about blogs is that people trust them much more than they trust advertisements simply because they have more of the ?word of mouth? kind of appeal. Blogs also give you a chance to promote YOU. This is a company where people join people, not companies or products, so it?s extremely essential that you brand yourself as a person of knowledge and worth. A blog will permit you to do just that.

The best platform with regard to blogging is WordPress and when you purchase your website name (about $12 annually) and hosting (about $5 per month), blogging is practically free of charge.

The next best free MLM marketing strategies are VIDEO and Article promotion. For video marketing, you need little greater than a topic and a video camera (you can also use a webcam, digital camera that includes a record function or perhaps a camera phone if that?s all you?ve got). All you have to do is make a brief recording of yourself speaking on a certain topic (Example: your business, marketing strategies, tips, tutorials or trainings, products you promote, etc) and at the conclusion, direct people back towards the applicable website (either your blog, company site, capture page or what perhaps you have). Now all there?s left to complete is upload your video to YouTube and various other videos sites around the web.

Article marketing is simply the same concept, except you?re creating articles rather than videos and submitting these phones article directories instead of video sites.

Now I want to talk about one of the most popular things in free MLM marketing, SOCIAL MEDIA. Sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter have completely changed the world and the way we communicate with one another. They have also changed the way we can build an MLM online businesses.

If you acknowledge the truth that there are over six hundred MILLION active users upon Facebook alone, you will realise that marketing your company on social networking sites is certainly beneficial to your company.

With this amount of traffic, it is very simple to source people as potential prospects for your business. What you have to remember though, is that network marketing is all about building relationships and helping people. This means that ?spamming? your own opportunity on yours along with other peoples walls is a big ?no-no?. Instead, try easing it in to the conversation naturally.

Here?s a good strategy that you can use on Facebook immediately. Try finding a few individuals who you know but haven?t spoken to in a little while. ?Add? them as a friend and start a conversation together. Try saying something like, ?Hey first name. Long time no observe, how have you been?

This will lead to them telling you how they?re and usually asking you the way you are going, to which you may reply, ?Not much, just making money as well as travelling the world? (or even something along those lines but only when it?s true), then change the topic immediately. This kind of remark will drive them insane with curiosity and since you just moved on as well as didn?t really say other things, they will find it hard not to ask what you?re performing. You now have an open to share your opportunity together and potentially have an old friend taking a look at your business. It can?t get any easier than that.

VIENNA (AP) ? Naked men of all sizes and shapes are appearing on Vienna kiosks as a prestigious museum kicks off an exhibit of male nudity.

But outside the exhibition, organizers are being forced into cover-up mode after a storm of complaints that the ad posters are offensive.

In a show titled "Nude Men from 1800 to Today," the Leopold Museum opened its doors Friday to examine how artists have dealt with the theme of male nudity over the centuries.

"Mr. Big" ? a four-meter (more than 12-foot) high full-frontal photo mounted on plywood and depicting a naked young man in an indolent sprawl ? is set up near the show's entrance, lest there be any doubt what visitors are about to see.

Inside, around 300 art works are on display ? including the controversial photograph that is raising the ire of Viennese. Created by French artists Pierre & Gilles, "Vive La France" shows three young, athletic men of different races wearing nothing but blue, white and red socks and soccer shoes.

No visitors were complaining Friday as they filed past that photo and even more graphic examples of male nudity, including some depicted in sex acts.

"I've seen worse on late-night TV," said Franz Steiner, 27, as he left the show.

Not so in the city. Posters of the three men were given impromptu fig-leafs ? lines of red tape covering their private parts.

The complaints clearly caught the museum by surprise. Vienna's turn-of-the-century decadence allowed erotic artists such as Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt to flourish, and has turned these days into complacent acceptance of displays of the flesh. Today, lingerie ads are racy and one popular daily paper regularly features pictures of half-naked women.

Vienna's public transport system reacted laconically earlier this week to reports that a young woman on a downtown subway line was dressed in nothing but knee-high boots.

"We know that everyone has a different temperature comfort zone," the agency said in a statement. "But we do not think that our subways are so warm that one has to get undressed."

But there seems to be less tolerance for shows of male nudity. Museum officials say they received a flood of complaints by last week, mostly from outlying districts heavily populated by new immigrants from Muslim countries.

Museum director Tobias Natter says the flap serves to point out "that nobody gets offended by naked women, but with naked men: yes."

A poster near a school was also removed when parents complained.

"I can understand women with children who think that this is too wild, when the kids keep asking questions," said Susanne Eigner, a woman her 20s standing next to a still-uncovered poster.

But other reactions were positive.

"I like that we get to see naked men for a change," said Veronika Kren, as she paused from pushing her bike laden with groceries. "We have to look at naked women all the time and now I find it quite interesting to see something different ? and especially the reaction of the men."

The museum is making the most of the controversy. Natter says he hopes the poster will spark lively debate.

"Some people will say, 'What a shame. I want to see what's under that,'" he said about the red tape. "Others will say, 'Let's go the museum. There we can see the original.' And some will say, 'That's good. I don't want to see that in the public space.'

"It's about making people aware."
