How Does SPG Work in Treating Migraines and Headaches?

It is extremely typical in individuals to go through headaches and migraines. The persistent trait of such sort of pain can lead to stress and disability. If you go through these for a long time, you may need to undergo steady, lengthy treatment. But fret not; there is also a solution for migraines and headaches Suwanee GA that brings successful pain relief in an instant.

?

There is a new innovative treatment that delivers instant pain relief for migraines and headaches without using pills or injections. The Sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) nerve block utilizes an unique nasal applicator to safely and painlessly get rid of the pain. Other than headaches and migraines, SPG nerve block has been giving effective relief to an array of conditions including trigeminal neuralgia and fibromyalgia.

?

SPG nerve block is a method that includes administration of a topical anesthetic to the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) in the back of the sinus area. The nasal applicator has a plastic delivery tube which is soft and flexible so it is able to comfortably extend to the rear of the nasal cavity and put the anesthetic liquid directly where it has to be applied. It includes a small-sized flexible tip designed to help reduce irritation to the nasal lining. In the nasal cavity, the anesthetic liquid is sprayed right toward the group of SPG nerves.

?

Also known as nasal ganglion, the SPG nerve is an inner component of the head found at the back the nose and sinus location and near the throat. It is where neurons in the head are largely accumulated. SPG is also covered by a thin sheet of connective tissues and mucous membrane.

?

The nasal ganglion takes a role in creating pain linked with acute and cluster headaches, migraines, trigeminal neuralgia, facial pain and a lot more as a result of such a wide reach that the nerves from SPG spread to.

?

SPG nerve block Suwanee GA is being conducted by positioning the plastic tube of the nasal applicator via one or both the nostrils to apply the anesthetic. The anesthetic then tackles the ganglion area to ease multiple head and facial pain problems. This treatment is conducted as an outpatient.

?

The SPG nerve block helps in minimizing pain from a wide range of head and face problems such as acute and cluster headaches, migraines, shingles, head and neck cancer pain, reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, Sluder?s neuralgia, vasomotor rhinitis, and atypical facial pain.

?

Studies show that SPG nerve block is an excellent solution for acute and chronic facial and head pain. In a 2009 study, SPG radiofrequency treatment got remarkably high satisfactory results for patients with cluster headaches. Additional studies indicated that the treatment worked well at all for head and neck cancer pain and for chronic vasomotor rhinitis. It brought great comfort and decreased the demand for narcotic medication.

?

Obtaining relief for migraines and headaches is easy and need not to be uncomfortable. For a person who wants to quickly eliminate chronic headache or severe migraine Suwanee GA, SPG nerve block can just be the answer. This immediate solution needs no toxic medicines. With SPG nerve block it only requires few minutes to return to your regular lifestyle and stay pain-free for the rest of your life.

White shark diets vary with age and among individuals

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Many white sharks shift from fish to marine mammals as they mature, but individual sharks show surprising variability in dietary preferences.

White sharks, the largest predatory sharks in the ocean, are thought of as apex predators that feed primarily on seals and sea lions. But a new study by researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, shows surprising variability in the dietary preferences of individual sharks.

The researchers described their findings in a paper published online September 28 in PLoS ONE. They analyzed the composition of growth bands in shark vertebrae to trace variations in diet over a shark's lifetime. Stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen incorporated into an animal's tissues serve as a natural tracer of dietary inputs.

"We did find that white shark diets changed with age, as expected, but we were surprised that the patterns and extent of change differed among individuals," said Sora Kim, who led the study as a UCSC graduate student and is now at the University of Wyoming.

The researchers analyzed vertebrae of 15 adult white sharks that had been caught along the west coast (14 off California and one off Baja California). Sharks in this population consume a wide range of prey, including seals, sea lions, dolphins, fish, and squid. But not every shark eats the same mix of prey, said coauthor Paul Koch, professor of Earth and planetary sciences at UCSC.

"We confirmed that the diets of many individuals observed at seal and sea lion rookeries shift from fish to marine mammals as the sharks mature," he said. "In addition, we discovered that different individual sharks may specialize on different types of prey. These two types of flexibility in feeding behavior are difficult to document using traditional methods, but may be very important for understanding how the population is supported by the eastern Pacific ecosystem and how it may respond to changes in that ecosystem."

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently announced that it will consider whether to protect the west coast population of white sharks under the Endangered Species Act.

Tagging studies have shown that the white sharks found along the California coast have a regular migratory pattern, cruising coastal sites from late summer to early winter and moving to offshore areas during the rest of the year. While sharks within this population may have predictable movement patterns, the new study shows that there are important dietary and behavioral differences among individual sharks.

The study relied on vertebrae obtained from white shark specimens in various collections. The sharks had been caught at different times and places along the coast from 1957 to 2000. "Interestingly, we do see a small shift in diet as marine mammal populations increased after the passage of the Marine Mammal Protection Act in 1972," Kim said.

In addition to Kim and Koch, the coauthors of the paper include James Estes, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCSC, and Tim Tinker, a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and adjunct professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCSC. This research was funded by the National Science Foundation.

Health Documentary Film Review: A Doctor of Chiropractic's ...

By Dr. Donald A. Ozello DC

Las Vegas Informer

The NOVA special ?Marathon Challenge? intends to find out if the average person standing on the sidelines can be transformed into an athlete who can finish the Boston Marathon.

?Marathon Challenge? aired on PBS in 2008. This interesting documentary follows thirteen sedentary/non-athletes through forty weeks of marathon training. The runner?s age, physical fitness levels and reasons for running the marathon cover a wide spectrum. The runner?s share a common dream: To run the ultimate test of endurance, the oldest marathon in the United States and one of the toughest marathons in the world, The Boston marathon.

The participants become known as Team NOVA. Running coaches, medical experts and three time Boston Marathon champion Uta Pippin work with Team NOVA. The members receive V02 Max to measure their aerobic fitness levels and DEXA scans to determine their body fat percentages.

The V02 Max and DEXA scan were repeated throughout the forty week training period. Each member of Team NOVA increased dramatically in the V02 Max testing. Proving proper run training increases aerobic fitness and strengthens the cardiovascular system. Individuals with a higher V02 Max values have a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and Type 2 Diabetes.

The positive physiological effects of aerobic exercise are demonstrated with high quality computer animation and explained in easy to understand terminology.

The DEXA testing results revealed little improvement in the team members weight and body fat percentage. Only one runner lost a significant amount of weight because running at a slow pace does not burn a significant amount of calories.

One of the original twelve team members is forced to stop training due to multiple stress fractures in her shin. She is replaced by a three hundred pound former NFL football player. He explains running a marathon is a challenge for him because he is built for power sports, not long distance running.

Team NOVA members train together and individually through the cold winter months to prepare for the marathon. The runners build physical and mental endurance and toughness while overcoming personal challenges.

A Harvard professor explains, ?Humans are born to run. Early man could run animals to exhaustion.? Team NOVA members prove this statement correct as they train their bodies and minds for the Boston Marathon.

I highly recommend the NOVA special ?Marathon Challenge.?

Watch and learn how the human body and a championship athletic mindset develop with correct and consistent training. The motivated runners of Team NOVA inspire themselves to live healthier. ?Marathon Challenge? demonstrates without a doubt that the average person standing on the sidelines can be transformed in an athlete who can finish the Boston Marathon.

Iraqi convicts riot, escape from prison; 12 killed

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Prisoners seized weapons and set off hours-long clashes with security guards at a prison in Saddam Hussein's hometown that left 12 dead, including 10 guards, before dozens of inmates managed to escape from the facility, Iraqi officials said Friday.

Many of those who escaped from the prison in Tikrit, 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of Baghdad, were al-Qaida suspects, said a provincial spokesman but he could not say whether the terror group was behind the prison break.

The violence erupted on Thursday night, said Mohammed al-Assi, the spokesman for Salahuddin province where Tikrit is located. Several inmates broke into the prison storeroom and grabbed weapons kept there, overpowering the guards, he said.

The prisoners then engaged in an hours-long gun battle with the security troops inside the facility before breaking out of the prison on Friday morning. Security troops later regained control of the prison, al-Assi said.

Following the prison break, a curfew was imposed in Tikrit, he added.

"Everything is under control now. Our security forces are chasing the escaped prisoners and have already recaptured some," al-Assi told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

A provincial health official, Raed Ibrahim, confirmed that 12 people died in the violence ? 10 prison guards and two inmates. He said 32 people were wounded in the clashes.

Qutaiba al-Jubouri, a lawmaker from the province, said a total of 81 inmates, including some who had been sentenced to death, managed to escape but that 36 of them were quickly recaptured.

"This is a regrettable security breach," said al-Jubouri, adding that an investigation will follow, "starting with the commanders of the security forces" at the prison.

He added that special forces were sent to Tikrit from Baghdad in order to put down the rioting.

Another lawmaker, Hakim al-Zamili, said the inmates burned all the prison records, which will complicate efforts to track down those who escaped.

Prison breaks are common in Iraq and are a big embarrassment to the country's Shiite-led government.

IMF urges Sudan to seek debt relief from donors

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The International Monetary Fund on Thursday urged Sudan to meet with donors to discuss debt relief, as the north African country continues to reel from the secession of its southern region.

Some of the fund's board members also called for "exceptional efforts" from the IMF and the international community to help Sudan reduce its debt of about $40 billion. But the lobby for debt relief is unlikely to be successful while Sudan continues to face criticism over its human rights abuses.

"Directors encouraged the authorities to step up their dialogue with creditors and donors to garner support for debt relief," said a statement from the 24-member IMF board, which discussed Sudan as part of an annual economic review.

The IMF also commended Sudan's tough austerity package to help overcome the loss of oil revenues, but said the country should do more to tighten monetary policy and strengthen the independence of the Bank of Sudan.

South Sudan seceded in July 2011, taking three-quarters of Sudan's critical oil revenue with it. Leaders from the two sides finally reached a border security deal on Wednesday to restart badly needed oil exports.

However, they failed to settle the fate of at least five disputed oil-producing regions along the border, which have been the source of tensions and intermittent fighting.

Sudan sorely needs a financial lifeline from international donors, but it is unable to borrow from the IMF after failing to pay back previous loans and efforts to reschedule debts it owes other countries have faltered.

The United States and other powers criticize Sudan for human rights violations and a harsh crackdown on rebels. Western powers also shun Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir who was indicted by the International Criminal Court over war crimes in Darfur, the site of a nearly decade-old insurgency.

Washington still maintains its 1997 embargo on the country over Sudan's role in hosting prominent Islamist militants. The sanctions restrict U.S. trade and investment with Sudan and block the assets of the Sudanese government.

Apple files patent application for 'intelligent automated assistant,' sounds like Siri

Siri's managed to make it into several Apple devices now, so it doesn't shock us to spy the company's attempt to patent the polite (somewhat frosty) tones of its voice navigation system. A pretty deep patent application filed today describes an "intelligent Automated Assistant," with the claims describing an application that is guided through the user's speech -- and all wrapped in a "conversational interface." So far, so Siri. The filing elaborates on Apple's earlier filings, explaining how this digital assistant furthers the users' demands with additional requests for speech-based information -- hopefully resulting in that map location or a movie booking you were after.

This "user intent" is then put to use, launching an additional app or performing the specified function, while non-speech input (presumably like the ability to correct your requests in text form) get a brief mention. We do get plenty of description on commands though, with some pretty thorough response tables and examples of "anchor text" -- something that the automated assistant tries to pluck from your ramblings in order to make sense of them. The full version resides at the source below, if you're looking for 51 verbose pages explaining Siri's inner workings.

Neymar leads Santos to Recopa Sudamericana title

Rio De Janeiro, Sep 27

p>Neymar scored his 46th goal of the year as Santos defeated Universidad de Chile 2-0 to secure their first Recopa Sudamericana title.

The Brazil striker netted with a cool finish in the 27th-minute at Sao Paulo's Pacaembu stadium but wasted a chance to double his tally by missing a penalty just before half-time Wedneday, Xinhua reports.

Defender Bruno Rodrigo secured the win with a 60th-minute header after a Felipe Anderson free-kick.

The result gave Santos a 2-0 aggregate victory after a 0-0 draw in last month's first leg in Chile's capital Santiago.

"I am very happy - this is yet another title," said Neymar, who at 20 already has six trophies to his name.

"I have to thank all of my teammates and our fans who have given us great support."

Neymar also paid tribute to national teammate Paulo Henrique Ganso, who played in the first leg for Santos before joining Sao Paulo last week.

"I am sad that he is not here because he is my brother, but the most important thing is that he is now happy," said Neymar, who has now scored 46 goals from 54 matches in 2012.

"Paulo is a part of this. He did so much for Santos and helped us in the first match (of the final) in Santiago."

The Recopa Sudamericana pits the winners of the previous year's Copa Libertadores against the reigning Copa Sudamericana champions.

Is Lack of Communication a Red Flag? | World of Psychology

Is Lack of Communication a Red Flag?Over time I?ve learned to confront the infamous ?red flags? when it comes to the dating world.

There may have been a tiny voice inside my head that said ?this doesn?t seem right,? but because I didn?t truly want to believe that was the case, I?d push it aside and move on. Well, one of the more pet-peevish warning signs that always left me clueless was when the other person (in my situations it was a guy, but I don?t want to target the whole male species here) could not express how he felt.

It?s also unfortunate when the silence goes beyond just articulating feelings, and he simply can?t communicate? at all. Your messages and texts go ignored, and you?re left wondering how you didn?t foresee this issue to begin with.

We all know communication in relationships is important, but in the early stages, is a tight-lipped manner a red flag signaling you to run the other way?

I?d say yes, considering a block in communication is fatal in serious, long-term relationships. ?The degree of block can vary with the severity or repeating of the communication stop,? Daniel Evans writes in his article, ?The Importance of Communication in Relationships.? ?A block in the relationship exists or will grow when communication is just flat out avoided.?

Evans grew up with the notion of not wanting to upset others; however, that only propelled him to avoid communicating on touchy topics altogether. ?In adult relationships, this behavior only avoided the hard issues that people have to work through for the relationship to be healthy and grow.?

Along with avoidance, diversion is another troublesome communication tactic. If the other person?s questions and curiosities are not addressed, the relationship will no longer be able to move forward.

Anna Solo, a freelance photojournalist, asserts that a lack of communication in any stage of a relationship should be constituted as a red flag. ?People often wait to expose their flaws until after they?ve gotten comfortable with someone, so if that quality pops up right at the start, I feel like it can only go downhill from there,? she says. ?There?s a difference between being shy and being a bad communicator, and if someone can?t communicate well or can?t push themselves to from the beginning, what other foundation can there be for a good relationship? There?s no way to cultivate a healthy relationship if you can?t discuss things.?

Ashley Knox, who has a master?s degree in social work, wasn?t as quick to throw in the towel. She believes that communicating effectively may take time. ?You have to learn about the other person?s communication style and how it works with your own or how it conflicts with your own,? she notes. ?As a couple, all of that needs to be discussed. If communication cannot be improved, then there is no relationship to begin with. Being a couple means being a team and working on things together and growing together. Not every couple that gets together is going to have the same communication pattern. Everyone is raised differently and deals with problems differently.?

Freelance writer Shaheen Darr previously wrote about red flags in relationships. Darr believes that a lack of communication definitely needs to be taken care of before moving on. ?A partner who is withdrawn and not willing to show any love, either through communication or in a physical sense, will leave the other partner feeling unfulfilled and insecure.? Insecurity in itself definitely is not beneficial to relationships either.

Whatever the circumstances causing insufficient communication, when you start to feel that uncomfortable inkling that the dynamic is off, it probably doesn?t hurt to follow your intuition.

Non-actuary Job at an Insurance Company - Actuarial Outpost

Difficult to know how to answer this one.

On the one hand, a potential employer may be less interested up front if you give them the impression your goal is a different one from the one you are applying for.

But some employers would also be supportive of this, and progressing to others areas might be a common part of company culture. I think it depends on the company, and if you could get someone on the board who works for the company to advise you, that might help.

I'm in your boat, and told my employer my 3-5 yr goal would be to work in actuarial. She was fine with that, and couldn't be happier to have someone with real Excel skills teach her analysts that use Excel all the time, and rather inefficiently. I know little about health insurance, so this experience is good background. In the end I might find that some other position presents reasonable advancement opportunities.

You can always work on the exams without telling your employer at all. With a Ph.D. you sound pretty smart, you should be able to blow through the first 4 in a year or two without too much expense to yourself, and before you know it you WILL be in an actuarial capacity, either at this company or elsewhere. Given the chance, make opportunities to get friendly with actuarial if at all possible, although that's probably easier than said if you don't have a regular business need to be over there.

COOLING Ceiling Fans If you live anywhere outside of California, you?ve probably noticed how much your electricity bill jumps in the warmer months due to air conditioning, but you may have just resigned yourself to that costly expense because you figured it was either that or sitting in the heat. What you may not have considered is how effective ceiling fans are as an alternative to AC. Unlike regular fans, their raised and central position allows them to circulate air and cool an entire room, and a? typical ceiling fan uses about the same amount of power as a 100 watt incandescent light bulb . Even if you already have an AC for the unbearably hot days, you can also purchase an? Energy Star -rated ceiling fan like the? Hampton Bay one ?you see above, to get you through the late spring and early fall AC-free, for energy savings all year round. Cellular Shades Large windows are usually considered a plus, but they do have one downside ? their tendency to allow heat to enter or escape a room very easily. Installing? Low-e windows ?is a viable option, but if you?re looking for a less resource-intensive fix,? cellular shades ?are relatively inexpensive and you can install them yourself. Many cellular shades are made of soft, double layered fabric that still lets daylight in without raising the temperature of a room drastically. Low-E Windows Low-e or low emissivity windows are windows that have been treated with a special coating that allows them to be more energy-efficient and therefore reduce the amount of work that your air conditioner needs to do. Many low-e windows are Energy Star qualified and can lower your monthly electricity bill up to 15%. Almost every window size and shape today comes in a low-e version and these products can also make your home more comfortable in the winter by keep drafts at bay and keep your furniture from fading due to sunlight since they reflect the long-wave light rays that carry UV. Energy Star Air Conditioners You might think that you?re being eco-friendly by keeping your 20 year old air conditioner in action, but if you haven?t yet switched to an Energy Star-rated model , your AC might be leaking dollars and cents. In fact, if your central air conditioning unit is more than 12 years old, replacing it with an Energy Star-qualified unit could cut your cooling costs by 30% and prevent 1,600 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year. If you want to see how much you stand to save by swapping out your AC, take the Home Efficiency Audit here. HEATING/COOLING Woman feeling warm in sweater photo ?from Shutterstock A Sweater Here?s one green product on our list that?s 100% free (since you probably own at least one sweater already).? Throwing on a sweater when it?s chilly ?might seem like a no-brainer, but you?d be surprised how many people turn their thermostats up to a balmy 78 degrees in December while they walk around in a tank top. By just wearing a few more layers, you can really chop down your heating bill in the colder months and you can even use the cash you save to buy yourself a cute new sweater! Programmable Thermostat Getting a? programmable thermostat ?for your home?s heating and cooling system is like giving the Scarecrow a brain. These intelligent devices give you much more control over your house?s temperature and energy usage and allow you to easily view or even adjust your thermostat remotely. The customizable setting buttons also allow you to ?set it and forget it,? and? it?s estimated that homeowners can save about $180 a year ?by properly setting their programmable thermostats and maintaining those settings. Dual/Tri-Pane Glass Windows Dual and tri-pane or double and triple-pane windows are insulating windows that have multiple layers of glass instead of just one. The spaces between the glass panes are then filled with air or another gas for further temperature control. INSULATION Spot Infrared Thermometer If you?re looking to find pesky air leaks, this handy spot infrared thermometer will be your new best friend. This handy and relatively inexpensive little gadget can detect hot and cold patches and quickly tell you where to apply extra insulation or caulking. Before these were around, you would have to call a professional to perform an energy audit on your home (which could cost hundreds of dollars), but now you can take matters into your own hands (literally) for about $30. Draft Guards Contrary to what you might think, energy-saving products don?t have to be high-tech or costly. Case in point: these? draft guards ?that are as elementary as they are effective. Draft protectors slip right under your doors and (as their name implies) prevent air from passing under them, ensuring that you?re only paying to heat or cool the rooms that you intend to. Great Stuff Insulating Foam Sealant There?s a reason they call this stuff ?Great Stuff.? It fills gaps and cracks in your home that might be leaking air and causing your heating or cooling bills to increase. You don?t need to be an expert to use it ? just identify cracks or voids (up to 1? wide) that are letting air escape and squeeze some? Great Stuff? right into them. The substance will expand to take the shape of cracks and form an airtight, water-resistant bond. Magnetic Vent Covers Your home?s vents (if you have central air conditioning) carry cool air to your rooms in the summer, but can be an unwanted source of drafts in the winter. A simple, aesthetically pleasing and inexpensive way to close off these openings is to use? magnetic vent covers . They can be cut to size, used and reused infinitely and can reduce the energy you waste trying to keep your home warm. Recycled Insulation Just as you can put on extra layers to stay warm, your home can maintain its temperature with less energy when it?s properly insulated. There are many products available to carry out this job but we recommend staying away from fiberglass and using Ultratouch recycled denim insulation .?We recommend Ultratouch for most spaces but if you?re working in a space that?s a bit difficult to install chunky layers of denim insulation (such as an attic),? blow-in natural insulation ?is a great?fire resistant and formaldehyde-free option as well. LIGHTING LED Light Bulbs Hopefully you watched? our video explaining how LED lights bulbs can help you save money and energy ?in your home, but in case you didn?t, we?ll reiterate our main point ? LED light bulbs can help you save money and energy in your home!? Switching to LED bulbs ?is really a no-brainer when you see how much you can save, and each bulb typically lasts close to 20 years ? it?s an investment worth making, especially since they start at just $22 a bulb . APPLIANCES Energy Star Appliances If you?ve been faithful to your old appliances and kept them in good working condition all these years, we applaud you, but unfortunately they might not be paying you back in kind. Energy Star-rated appliances can be 15-30% (depending on the appliance) more efficient than their less advanced counterparts, which means that with an upgraded product, you could be saving dollars and cents every time you run your dishwasher, open your fridge or do a load of laundry. It?s true that buying new appliances can be costly, but considering the energy savings, it?s an investment that could end up paying for itself, and decrease the strain on our national power grid. For even more energy-saving products, visit Home Depot?s EcoOptions website . + EcoOptions At The Home Depot, we pride ourselves on being sustainability minded. We offer many different Eco Options, including WaterSense? and ENERGY STAR? labeled products, and wood harvested from sustainable forests. Whatever your home improvement project, we?ve got the organic solutions that can help make your home healthier and air cleaner; and products that can help you conserve water, be more energy efficient and save money. Officer critical after being shot during child porn raid

Gregory Bull / AP

A police official walks past the Maplewood Apartments after a shooting in Lakeside, Calif. Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012. The San Diego County sheriff's Capt. Duncan Fraser said two deputies and a suspect have been shot while the deputies were trying to contact a child abuse suspect at the suburban apartment complex.

One of two veterans in the San Diego Sheriff's Department injured in a gun battle in Lakeside, Calif., is in critical condition, law enforcement sources said Tuesday night.

Detective Ali Perez and Sgt. Craig Johnson were reportedly shot and injured by Daniel Witczak after confronting him Tuesday afternoon in a Lakeside apartment complex, sheriff's department authorities said.

Witzcak, 30, was confronted by the deputies for allegedly keeping pornographic images of his girlfriend's children on his cell phone with the intention of selling them, according to his girlfriend.

??

Perez was in critical but stable condition Tuesday night, sources told NBC San Diego. He was shot at least twice with a high-powered gun, including once in the stomach.

Johnson was shot in the arm and is expected to recover.

Confronted about child porn, man shoots two deputies in San Diego County

Lt. Duncan Fraser from the sheriff's department said both endured hours of surgery after being transported to the hospital.

?It?s too early to tell,"?Sheriff Bill Gore said of the deputies' condition, "but any time you have major gunshot trauma, there?s great cause for concern.?

A shooting victim arrives at the hospital following a gun battle in San Deigo, Calif.

Detective Perez is an 18-year veteran with the department who is assigned to the Child Abuse Unit. Sgt. Johnson is a 23-year veteran with the department who is assigned to the Santee station.

Fraser said he knows Perez well, and that for him to be assigned to the Child Abuse Unit demonstrates that he's "a good detective and has the ability to do a good, thorough investigation."

Perez was one of the deputies who found 15-year-old Charles Andrew Williams, the suspect in the Santana High School shooting of 2001.

The entire sheriff?s homicide detail was at the scene of the shooting investigating and canvassing the area, Fraser said. They secured a warrant to investigate the residence early Tuesday evening.

One of the deputies is married to an employee with the San Diego Police Department, SDPD Chief Bill Lansdowne said.

"This is a very difficult day for the San Diego County Sheriff's Department and everyone in law enforcement," Gore said to reporters after one of the deputies had just gotten out of surgery. "It?s a constant reminder of what our law enforcement officers in this country face every day."

Witczak was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital, according to a hospital source. There is no word yet on his condition.

The girlfriend told NBC San Diego that she was getting her two daughters ready for school when she found pornographic pictures of her boyfriend and her two daughters engaged in sex acts on his cell phone. Her boyfriend told her that he planned to sell the photos for $50,000 to a child porn site.

The woman said that after the deputies stormed the apartment, her boyfriend shot the two deputies with a high-powered rifle and then shot himself.

Civilian contractors face negative image, mission requirements

By Stuart Tiffen, NBC News contributor

Scott Dennis, a 42-year-old Air Force veteran, never considered outright retirement after getting out of the military in 2009. Instead he went to work for private military and security firms and soon found himself back in Afghanistan.

"It was an easy decision," he told NBC News, saying he couldn't afford to not work and wasn't ready for a life of leisure. "The only drawback was the extended time away from home."

But as criticism continues to swirl around the private security firm formerly known as Blackwater, civilian contractors serving in combat zones, like Dennis, find themselves caught between the demand for their services and negative perceptions in the public and even the military.?Sometimes creative measures must be taken to ensure their own safety.?

On Sept 11, Rep. John Tierney, D-Mass., called for steeper fines and a potential ban on all future contracts for the private military and security contracting ?firm formerly known as Blackwater. Now on its third name, Academi (also formerly known as Xe) agreed in August to pay $7.5 million to settle charges for weapons export violations.?

?This has been a repeated problem that?s gone on ? this isn?t a one-off situation, and it?s not just Blackwater,? Tierney told POLITICO last Tuesday.??We?ve had companies taking millions of dollars from taxpayers, repeatedly making questionable decisions. ... If we don?t hold them accountable, then it?s going to keep happening.?

A day later Alan Estevez, assistant secretary of defense for logistics and materiel readiness, and Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Craig Crenshaw, the Joint Staff?s vice director of logistics, testified in favor of the use of private firms before the House Armed Services Committee, recommending that the Department of Defense ?continue its momentum? in the increasing use and role of civilian contractors.

It?s against this conflicting backdrop that the men and women in the private military and security contracting industry ??where many veterans turn for employment after military service???find themselves.?

Dennis had been a recruiter and then a loadmaster on special operations forces aircraft serving in Afghanistan before he retired. The unfolding financial crisis had him worried about job security, but there was never really any doubt about seeking employment with a contracting firm, he said.?

Though he initially took a pay cut when he worked at firms such as the Virginia-based Dyncorp and Los Angeles-based McNeil Technologies (now AECOM), Dennis eventually found he was making more than three times his previous active-duty salary.?

His contracting jobs were nothing like his former aviation career, however. During a one-year stint with McNeil Technologies, Dennis was stationed at a forward operating base ?in western Afghanistan, driving around the countryside in an armored vehicle with an Afghan liaison.?

Dennis said he was concerned about the lack of safety net for contractors in Afghanistan. He worked hard to make sure the Americans in uniform would remember he was essentially one of them.?

?There is very little support for contractors if something goes bad outside the wire and you need help,? Dennis said. ?I tried to develop strong relationships with (active-duty military members) at my forward operating base; that way they had a face to go with the name if I needed help.??

Perception of civilian contractors took a hit among the military as well as the general public after the 2007 Blackwater shootings in Baghdad. Dennis said he thinks contractors are perhaps over-regulated now partially because of the resulting blowback.

?After the incidents in Iraq they became the poster child of the evil contractors shooting up towns,? he said. ?Most contractors are not armed now, and I think (that lack of weapons)?may take away what little self defense contractors had.?

And there is little leeway for illicit defensive measures. He recounted the tale of a colleague who?d lost his job for carrying an M4 rifle while out in the field in Afghanistan.

But there are real risks that come along with the job: More than 2,700 American civilian contractors have died in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001, according to numbers?published by the Department of Labor.

Despite the fact that many contractors are also veterans, relations between the civilians and military are not always convivial, Dennis said.

?I?ve seen contractors mistreated on a regular basis when it comes to living conditions and other things,? he said. ?There is kind of a mindset of ?They are making lots of money, so screw those guys.??
